The Impact of Religion:Challenges for Society, Law and Democracy. Second international interdisciplinary conference at Uppsala University, April 24-26, 2018
This application concerns funding of an international, interdisciplinary conference hosted by Uppsala Religion and Society Research Centre (CRS) and the interdisciplinary research programme The Impact of Religion: Challenges for Society, Law and Democracy (IMPACT). It offers a forum for sharing recent research on the role of religion in both the public and the private sphere – locally, nationally, internationally, with the aim to initiate new collaboration and research. Special attention is paid to the links between religion, law and wider social developments. Migrations, provoked by international conflicts and poverty, challenge secular states regarding the handling of religious and cultural pluralism. At the same time secularist counter-reactions oppose religious visibility in the public sphere and religious/ethnic pluralism is questioned. Increasing racism and religiously related terrorism, adds energy to growing polarizations. Additionally new existential issues appear due to feelings of insecurity arising from war, terror, global warming and advancing technology. These ongoing changes raise new questions regarding the role of religion in democracy, human rights, law, family life, healthcare, well-being, welfare and science. The conference fills a gap in the European and international interdisciplinary field focusing religion and society, by providing a space for interaction and intersectional creativity between disciplines that are mostly working separately.
