Strindberg's books

August Strindberg's last collection of books, comprising some 6,000 items, is owned by Nordiska Museet but has been on deposit at the Strindberg Museum in Stockholm since 1984. Much of the collection consists of volumes annotated by Strindberg himself. These annotations, which can themselves be considered as manuscripts, are in great demand among Strindberg scholars. Strindberg's annotations were of various types: he frequently crossed things out and underlined other things and often he added spontaneous comments in the margins. Other types of annotations are proof corrections, comparisons, references to other works, etc.
The pages containing annotations are scanned and collected in a database with a bibliographical reference added for each page. This project has been in progress in stages for more than three years. Thanks to the latest grant from the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation, those in charge of the project now reckon to be able to register the major part of the relevant annotations in the books and even to make some of the data available on the Internet. The primary goal of the project has been to avoid further handling of the old and often worn volumes and, by transferring the annotations to another medium, to make them more readily available and in a better form for research.
