Scholarly editions of Swedish classical authors' oeuvres
The Swedish Society for Belles-Lettres (Svenska Vitterhetssamfundet) publishes scholarly editions of classical Swedish authors. The project aims at continuing the series of editions which was started in 1910 with Olof von Dalins Den Swänska Argus. Thus far the Swedish Authors (Svenska Författare) series comprises more than 240 volumes by 35 different authors writing during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. In the C. J. L. Almqvist series, Collected Works (Samlade Verk), 16 of more than 50 planned volumes have been published. The literary and linguistic works that are being edited within the project are some volumes in C. G. af Leopold and J. L. Runeberg`s Collected Writings (Samlade skrifter), C. J. L. Almqvist`s Samlade Verk and Jesper Swedberg`s A Swedish Wordbook (Swensk Ordabok). There are about ten editors involved in the project.
Directions have been formulated concerning the textual problems that are encountered in the scholarly work. These deal not only with the choice of copy-text. In establishing the text the editor also faces problems such as scribal and printing errors, inconsistencies, inadequate punctuation and variants. All editions will be provided with introductions discussing literary and linguistic problems, and, in some cases, problems within the field of the history of ideas. There will also be textual commentaries with lists of variants and descriptions of manuscripts, earlier drafts and the different printed editions. The volumes will also contain glossaries.
