Special collections of the Jewish Library in Stockholm

During the years 1998-2002 Uppsala University Library realized their Judaica-project, the purpose of which was to create a national database resource of Judaica literature. In this project the main part of the holdings of the Jewish Library were catalogued and registered in the Swedish national bibliographic database Libris. The new project aims at cataloguing and registering the remaining special collections. The personal library of the former rabbi of Stockholm, Marcus Ehrenpreis, consists of titles mainly from the interwar period, reflecting all aspects of Judaica and Jewish Studies. Many of the titles are not held by any other library in Sweden. The collection of Yiddish books of the Jewish Library in Stockholm is by far the largest in Sweden.

Interest in the Yiddish language has increased since Sweden ratified the Council of Europe Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities. There are also many unique titles among older, uncatalogued Hebrew literature and among the periodicals held by the library. Since the conclusion of the previous project, the demand for the titles registered in the Libris database has grown. The amount of interlibrary loans has also risen dramatically. The objective of this new project is to continue to make these collections accessible for researchers and students of Jewish Studies and for all those interested in Jewish culture, religion and history.
