The Literature Bank: A digital resource for Swedish literature and humanities

The project aims at establishing a national literature bank that will publish digital versions of Swedish literary works and certain humanist literature. The bank will embrace the essential components of the Swedish literary heritage but will also, on a voluntary basis, incorporate digital final versions of newly-written works. For teaching and learning purposes, older texts will be provided with introductory material and commentaries. Publication will be via the Internet and will include both text pages (XML) and facsimile pages (pdf). The literature bank is meant to serve as a cultural-historical and literary resource for research, teaching and popular education. Its target groups are researchers, university students, upper-secondary-school pupils and people with a general interest in literature.

The literature bank will be non-commercial and its contents will be freely available to all users. It will be based on the cooperation of three bodies with national responsibility for different areas: the Royal Swedish Library, the Language Bank at Göteborg University and the Swedish Academy. The work will initially have the form of a two-year pilot project, partly for publishing works already available in digital form and partly for the digitisation and publication of works currently available only in paper versions. The purpose of the pilot project is to try out the technical and pedagogical solutions to be used.
