Northern sinners: Sweden and Finland in the Medieval Penitentiary records
This project aims to present and analyse the texts concerning the Church Province of Uppsala from the late medieval period that can be found in the archives of the Penitentiary. This is the authority within the papal curia responsible for questions regarding absolution. In various handwritten volumes there are approximately 430 relevant texts, which give us new insights in medieval Sweden and Finland. The material has not before been available for scholars, and it is of great interest to law and church historians as well as to philologists. The latinist Dr. Sara Risberg and the historian Dr. Kirsi Salonen are employed in the project. The work is administrated by the Swedish National Archives and Diplomatarium Suecanum through Dr. Claes Gejrot. It is also supported by the Finnish National Archives. A scholarly reference group is attached to the project.
The final volume (in English) is planned to contain the following parts: (1) An introductory part on the medieval office of the Penitentiary. The texts will here also be presented in their philological, historical and theological context. (2) A complete critical edition of the Latin texts with the necessary textual notes. (3) Detailed summaries of the contents. (4) A commentary on the contents. (5) Indices of persons, places and things.
