Digitisation of the catalogue of the Bielke library at Skokloster castle
The project concerns the digitisation of the handwritten catalogue of the library in a local database, and a connection of the database to the national library database system LIBRIS in co-operation with the Swedish Royal Library. The Bielke library consists of about 8000 volumes, with more than 15000 prints from four centuries. This family library came from Salsta castle in Uppland to Skokloster in 1755 by heritage. The last owner of Salsta, Count Carl Gustaf Bielke, was one of the foremost book collectors of the 18th century. His books contain remarks on place of purchase and price, which gives unique information about the book market of the period. The great amount of prints in relation to the number of volumes is due to the fact that many of the volumes contain several prints, mainly dissertations from universities in the Baltic Sea area. Among these short prints are also hundreds of causal prints, mainly wedding and funeral poems. The library consists mainly of books from German or French speaking countries. They have often belonged to collections that were ruined or dispersed due to war. The digitisation increases our knowledge of our common European cultural heritage.
