Recataloguing and digitisation of collections of old books and manuscripts - a joint project
By help of modern technical means the project aims at increasing the knowledge and accessibility of the old book and manuscript collections in the public libraries in Skara, Västerås and Växjö. These collections, parts of which go back as far as to the Middle Ages, are due to the their breadth of subjects an important, sometimes unique, part of the Swedish and European cultural heritage. For these reasons it is of great importance for research and education that the collections are better known and more easily reachable today. The project is planned to be carried out in two parts. The catalogue work will be done within the National Union Catalogue of Swedish Libraries, LIBRIS. In order to make this work more efficiently it will be divided by subjects between the three libraries. The catalogue records will then be transferred into the local library catalogues. The digitisation work will be concentrated on manuscripts and printed material unique to each library and therefore very much asked for. Much of this material concerns biographical, genealogical and topographical matters, of interest to scholars both within and outside the libraries´ own regions. Each library also holds collections of sheets of music from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. They are in great demand both nationally and internationally and consequently suitable for digitisation.
