The collected works of Selma
The works of Selma Lagerlöf have never before been published in a complete critical edition. The goal of this project is to assemble material and plan for an edition of The Collected Works of Selma Lagerlöf. The text situation is complicated. A number of manuscripts are preserved. There are those that were published during Lagerlöf's lifetime and those that have remained unpublished. Each title would often be issued in numerous editions and most likely inundated with considerable revisions. These changes were not always from Selma Lagerlöf herself but also from publishers and friends, often, though not always, sanctioned by Lagerlöf. There were instances where Lagerlöf altered her texts before commissioning a translator. In order to arrive at an understanding of these processes - and to enable the selection of a correct text - a meticulous examination of the manuscripts is needed together with the registeration of differences held by each edition, as well as the correspondence in which Lagerlöf deliberates about the actual work process. A vital task for the project group will be to make an inventory and to a certain extent catalogue the material. Furthermore, a bibliography over research about Selma Lagerlöf needs to be set up and a proposal of text-critical principles and a strategy for future publication of her Collected Works are essential. The majority of the manuscripts and letters are kept at the Royal Library, but there is also material at the archives of the publishing house of Bonniers and other places. The project is a co-operative venture between the Royal Library and critics and researchers at the universities of Göteborg and Uppsala. Project leader is Professor Johan Svedjedal (Uppsala University).
