“Plåten” at the National Library of Sweden
The National Library of Sweden has many unique collections, both Swedish and foreign, mainly within the field of humanities. Access to complete bibliographic information about the collections of the National Library is of great importance for both national and international researchers. A digital version of the older catalogue will simplify and improve possibilities of finding material for researchers when searching for material in the National Library’s collection. Bibliographic data until 1955 is written by hand or typed on cards in what is called “Plåten”. During attempts to convert the catalogue important information has disappeared in the process. Therefore, manual searches amongst the cards in “Plåten” are necessary in order to retrieve complete information. Due to this manual handling, “Plåten” is exposed to daily wear. The intent of project “Plåten” is to create a digital copy of the catalogue so that the information within is searchable via the internet and that the physical catalogue can be preserved in its current state. This would have great advantages both to the library’s daily visitors as well as to the staff. Completing the project, the digitisation of the “Plåten” and the creation of the interface for searching it, will take two years and will be completed in the Fall of 2009. During the project several departments at the National Library will be involved
