Svenskt biografiskt lexikon (SBL) - Dictionary of Swedish National Biography - is the most important biographical work regarding Swedish individuals and families. Publishing began in 1917 and it consists today of 32 volumes covering about 8800 articles It has now reached the letter S. It is frequently used by social scientists and scholars in many disciplines. SBL is, together with libraries and archives, an integral part of the scholarly community. SBL was digitised and published on CD-ROM in 1997 (the latest update in 2004) which made full text search possible, such as place names or occupations. The use of CD-ROM has however decreased, and an increasing demand of Internet publishing has appeared. The project will make SBL available (against a fee) on the Internet and therefore even more easily accessible for the scholarly community and the interested public. An important aspect of this publication is the major importance of internet accessibility for a dictionary such as SBL.
