Future Challenges in the Nordics

Future Challenges in the Nordics is a research programme supporting work in the humanities and social sciences that addresses major social and cultural challenges facing people in the Nordic countries during the 21st century.

The programme seeks to promote research that deepens our understanding of the historical, cultural, social, and political processes that have led to the present, offering constructive perspectives on the path ahead. Humanities and social science researchers play a key role by critically examining how humans interact with their environment and institutions, contributing both knowledge and insight to ongoing societal development.

The aim is to produce research that is accessible and useful for citizens and policymakers alike, supporting public dialogue and decision-making in the face of complex future challenges.

The programme runs from 2021 to 2027.

The programme is jointly funded by several Nordic foundations, including the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland, Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, the Finnish Cultural Foundation, the Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland, the Brita Maria Renlund Memorial Foundation, and the Kamprad Family Foundation.
