In 1999, the Swedish Collegium or Advanced Study (SCAS) and Riksbankens Jubileumsfond set up a research programme for promising early-career scholars.

It is not possible to apply to the Pro Futura programme. Instead, specific universities and university colleges are invited to nominate researchers. Pro Futura researchers are financed for five years and in the course of the programme scholars are offered a tenured position at the nominating university.
