Digital keys to the archives. A pedagogic Internet based introduction to the material in at the regional state archives

A great part of current Swedish historiography deals with the upper classes of society. This is true for scientific as well as for popular writing. This is unfortunate, since there is need for knowledge about all social groups. It is a question of democratic principles to do with the right of all people to have their history written. It is equally important not only to search for explanations of societal development within certain sectors, but also to search within a wide range of sectors. If this is not done there is a risk of missing important factors, and the resulting description of history tends to be one-sided and even unfair. The purpose of the project is to counter-balance the focus on elites by stimulating and facilitating research about common people. The aim is to produce an Internet-based introduction to the records in the regional archives - records which also mirror the lives of ordinary people. We will describe individuals and events, present information about archive records, and place the stories in their historical context. These stories are to be gathered from all parts of the country and from a period covering three centuries (c. 1600-1900). The material will be thematically structured along themes that focus on everyday life, such as: love; livelihood; childhood; religion; and death. The working process will include three main steps: gathering material; text-writing and lay-out; and the adaptation into digital form. The end product is intended to interest a wide audience - from the young, to journalists, and amateur researchers, as well as to academic researchers, and teachers.
