Syfte
Projektets mål var att skapa en ny hemsida med en presentation av arkivmaterial som förvaras på de svenska landsarkiven. Hemsidan skulle utgöra en pedagogisk introduktion till landsarkivens bestånd och

•    levandegöra människor, levnadsvillkor och tankesätt,
•    förmedla kunskap om arkivmaterialets innehåll och potential,
•    förmedla grundläggande insikter i hur man kan använda materialet, och
•    kortfattat ge ett historiskt sammanhang.

Hemsidan skulle vara tematiskt uppbyggd kring teman som vi menar är viktiga för oss idag och som även varit viktiga för människor under tidigare perioder. Vi valde ”människonära” teman med anknytning till livets faser, sociala relationer, försörjning och samhälleliga normer kring gemenskap, religion, rättvisa m.m.

Hemsidan var tänkt att inspirera till mer forskning i landsarkivens handlingar. Syftet var särskilt att underlätta och stimulera forskning som rör människor ur samhällets bredare lager. Den historiska forskningens nuvarande fokus på samhällets eliter skulle därigenom kunna breddas till att omfatta alla sociala skikt.

Både mål och syfte har stått fast under projektets gång. Vissa tyngdpunktsförskjutningar har dock skett. Den ursprungligen tänkta mycket breda målgruppen har snävats in till att i första hand omfatta gymnasieelever, universitets- och högskolestudenter samt dessa gruppers lärare. Ändringen gjordes av pedagogiska skäl, då det visade sig svårt att finna en presentationsform och svårighetsgrad som skulle passa hela den först tänkta målgruppen. Icke desto mindre hoppas och tror vi att presentationen kan intressera även många utanför den snävare målgruppen.

Presentationens struktur har förändrats jämfört med de ursprungliga planerna. Vi har gått från fokus på öden och berättelser ur historien till fokus på historiska dokument. Tanken bakom förändringen är att vår främsta uppgift som arkiv är att visa fram dokumenten och deras potential och att åskådliggöra hur man kan få fram en historia ur dem, snarare än att berätta berättelser och visa hur de baseras på historiska dokument. Detta innebär en förskjutning av tyngdpunkt och ordningsföljd i presentationen men inte någon förändring av innehållet.

Deltagande arkivinstitutioner har utökats med Arkivcentrum i Dalarna ekonomisk förening som förvarar många slags handlingar med nära släktskap till landsarkivens bestånd.

Resultat
Projektet har resulterat i webbplatsen Arkivnycklar på www.riksarkivet.se/arkivnycklar.

Sajtens omfattning har anpassats efter de ekonomiska ramarna som blev mindre än vi från början tänkt. Av sju planerade teman producerades två: Kärlek och I unga år. Varje tema består av tio exempel. Samtliga landsarkiv i Sverige är representerade, inklusive de tre arkivinstitutionerna med landsarkivuppdrag (Stockholms stadsarkiv, Malmö stadsarkiv samt Värmlandsarkiv). Ett exempel härrör från Arkivcentrum i Dalarna ekonomisk förening.

Varje exempel inleds med ett eller några arkivdokument som visas upp, vid behov försedda med transkribering och ordförklaringar. Dokumenten är av många olika slag, t.ex. landsfiskalsrapporter, privata brev, skoluppsatser, barnteckningar, domböcker, skilsmässoansökningar och dagböcker. Tanken har varit att presentera många olika slags dokument för att visa på bredden i landsarkivens bestånd och ge information om en mångfald olika dokumenttyper och arkivbildare.

Som fördjupning ges upplysningar om både den arkivmässiga och den historiska kontexten. Man får bl.a. veta mer om dokumenttypen och arkivbildaren, om de berörda personerna, platserna och händelserna, om rådande lagstiftning och andra förhållanden som belyser dokumentet och dess innehåll. Till de flesta exempel ges litteraturtips. Det rör sig inte om något fullständigt forskningsläge eller nödvändigtvis den senaste litteraturen på området utan tips på några titlar som kan utgöra en ingång i det aktuella ämnet. Vi har strävat efter att välja titlar som är förhållandevis lättillgängliga, detta med tanke på den primära målgruppen som till största del består av ungdomar.

En mer allmän introduktion med presentation av sajten och projektet ingår också, liksom en ordlista med förklaringar av viktigare arkivtermer. Som sökingång för den som är intresserad av information om någon särskilt handlingstyp eller arkivbildare finns sidan ”Arkiv och dokument” med länkar till relevanta sidor.

Oförutsedda tekniska och metodiska problem
Genom att projektet har kunnat bygga vidare på den tekniska plattform som utvecklats för Riksarkivets hemsida har de tekniska problemen varit små och relativt enkla att åtgärda. Vi har nyttjat det redan befintliga webbverktyget Content Studio, som utvecklats av Teknikhuset AB. De enda tekniska tillägg som behövt utvecklas är en funktion för ordförklaringar samt en funktion för bläddring mellan dokumentsidor.

Arbetets integrering i myndigheten och hur arbetet kommer att vidareföras
Arkivnycklarna är tänkta att ligga på Riksarkivets hemsida under överskådlig tid. Det finns i dagsläget inga planer på att utöka exemplen ytterligare, eftersom resurser till sådant arbete saknas. Grundläggande underhåll kommer att utföras, främst i form av regelbunden kontroll av länkar. Smärre tillägg av uppgifter kan komma att föras in i den mån de aktualiseras och i mån av tid. I stort kommer dock webbplatsen att fortleva i sin nuvarande form.

Nya forskningsfrågor som har genererats
Projektet är inte ett frågeställningsstyrt projekt i vetenskaplig mening. Inte heller har det blivit tid till att i större skala på webbplatsen presentera forskningsuppslag, uppsatsämnen eller andra typer av forskningsfrågor. Visst har närläsningen av arkivmaterialet medfört att många forskningsidéer uppstått men det har inte funnits resurser att systematiskt formulera forskningsuppslag för en samlad presentation på webbplatsen.

Förmedling av projektets resultat
Genom att projektets resultat, webbplatsen Arkivnycklar, finns på nätet med nyckelord inlagda för sökmotorer som Google är det lätt tillgängligt. Arkivnycklarna presenteras och länkas på Riksarkivets startsida liksom på flera av landsarkivens egna webbsidor samt Arkivcentrum i Dalarnas hemsida. Information om webbplatsen har mejlats till ett stort antal kontakter inom universitets- och högskolevärlden. Likaså har Riksarkivets informationsenhet skickat ut reklam till skolor, släktforskarföreningar, bibliotek och arkiv i hela landet. Projektet och webbplatsen har även presenterats på svenska historikermötet i Lund 24–26 april 2008, på Arkivpedagogiskt Forum på Riksarkivet i Stockholm 3 september 2008 och på högre seminariet på Institutionen för ABM (arkivvetenskap, biblioteks- & informationsvetenskap samt musei- & kulturarvsvetenskap) vid Uppsala universitet 26 oktober 2009.

Kommentar till budgeten
Posten Övriga kostnader består av arvoden till IT-konsulten Teknikhuset i Umeå. Arvodena gäller vidareutveckling av webbverktyget Content Studio, skräddarsydd för projektet: en funktion för ordförklaringar samt en funktion för att kunna bläddra mellan sidor. I huvudsak har vi annars konsulterat Riksarkivets egen IT-personal och informatörer.

Aim
The aim of the project was to create a new website presenting archive materials from the Swedish regional archives. The website was meant to pedagogically introduce the collections kept by the regional archives and also to

•    make people, living conditions and ways of thought come alive
•    communicate knowledge about the contents and potential of the archive materials
•    communicate insights about how the sources can be used, and
•    give a short historical context.

The website was to be thematically organised around topics which we consider important today and which have also been important to people in the past. We chose topics connected to the phases of life, social relations, provision and society’s norms around community, religion, justice etc.

The purpose of the website was to inspire more research in the material of the regional archives. We especially wanted to facilitate and stimulate research about “common people”. The focus of current historical research on society’s elites would thereby potentially be broadened to include people of all walks of life.

Both the aim and purpose of the project have prevailed during the process. However, certain shifts of emphasis have taken place. We originally intended to address a very broad target group. For pedagogical reasons, the group has been narrowed down to high school and university students and their teachers; it proved difficult to find a presentation form and a degree of difficulty suitable for a broader target group. Nevertheless we believe and hope that the presentation will interest also many people outside the narrower target group.

The structure of the presentation has changed compared to our original plans. We have abandoned our focus on stories about people and events and instead chosen to use the historical documents as a starting point. The reason for this is that our most important purpose as archives is to show the documents and their potential, illustrating how it is possible to generate narratives from them, rather than tell stories and then show how they are based on historical documents. This changes the emphasis and order of the presentation but not its contents.

One participant has been added to the project, namely the Archive Centre in Dalarna. Many of the document categories kept at these archives have close affinity with the materials at the regional archives.

Results
The projects has resulted in the website Arkivnycklar (Keys to the Archives) at www.riksarkivet.se/arkivnycklar.

The size of the website has been adapted to the economic terms which turned out to be tighter than we originally planned. Of the seven planned topics, two were produced: Love and Youth. Each topic consists of ten examples. All regional archives in Sweden are represented, including the three other archives with commission to perform functions of a regional archive (City Archives of Stockholm, Archives of Värmland and City Archives of Malmö). One example originates from the Archive Centre in Dalarna.

Each example has one or two archive documents as a starting point. The documents are shown and, when required, transcribed and supplied with explanations of older words and expressions. The documents are of many different kinds, for example reports from local police superintendents, private letters, school essays, children’s drawings, judgement books, divorce documents and journals. Our aim has been to present many different kinds of documents in order to show how rich the collections at the regional archives are and to provide information about a variety of documents and records creators.

As the next step, the site offers information about the archival as well as the historical context. We tell more about the document category in question and the relevant records creator as well as the people, places and events involved, the prevailing legislation and other conditions of importance for understanding the document and its contents. Most examples include suggestions for further reading. The purpose is not to account for current research in the field as a whole, but rather to give tips about a few titles which would be a good place to start investigating the subject in question. We have chosen relatively accessible titles, with regard to youth being our main target group.

The site includes pages with a general introduction to the presentation and the project, as well as a glossary of essential archive terms. On the page “Archives and documents” we list document types and archive creators presented on the site, with links to relevant pages. This page serves as a path leading directly to for example police records or school essays.

Unforeseen technical and methodical problems
The project has to a high extent been able to use the existing technical platform developed for the website of the National Archives. Thanks to this solution, our technical problems have been small and relatively easy to solve. Vi have used the existing web tool Content Studio, developed by Teknikhuset AB. The only technical additions necessary have been a function for explaining words and expressions and a function for “turning pages”.

How the project is integrated into the authority and how the work will be continued
“Keys to the Archives” will exist on the website of the National Archives for the foreseeable future. Today, there are no plans to develop the website further, as the resources for such efforts do not exist. Basic maintenance will be carried out, mainly consisting of a continuous control of links. Lesser additions of information may be made if important details are brought to the fore, and in so far as time can be set aside for this. At large, the website will live on in its current form.

New research questions generated
The project is not a problem oriented project in a scientific sense. Neither has there been time to present suggestions for scientific problems and analysis nor subjects for essays or other scientific investigations. Certainly our close study of the historical documents has given us several ideas for research. However, the project economy has not given us the opportunity to systematically formulate research problems and present them in one place.

Communicating the project’s results
The results of the project are easily available on the Internet. Keywords for search engines like Google make the website easy to find. Keys to the Archives are presented and linked on the home page of the National Archive as well as the home pages of each Regional Archive and the Archive Centre in Dalarna. Information about the website have been mailed out to a large amount of contacts at the universities. Also, the Information Unit of the National Archives has sent out information to schools, genealogical associations, libraries and archives all over the country. The project and the website have been presented at the Swedish history conference in Lund April 24–26 2008, at the Forum for archive pedagogy at the National Archives in Stockholm September 3rd 2008 and at the research seminar at the Department of ALM (Archives, Library and Museum Studies) at Uppsala university October 26th 2009.

Commentary on the budget
“Other costs” consist of fees for computing consultants at Teknikhuset in Umeå. The fees concern development of the web tool Content Studio, especially adapted for the project. Two functions have been developed: one for word explanations and one for turning pages within the website. Otherwise we have mostly consulted our own computing and PR personnel.
