Det främsta målet med forskningsprogrammet Centrum för kognitiv semiotik (CCS) har varit att etablera ett forskningsområde som fokuserar på betydelse, genom att kombinera begrepp och metoder från semiotisk teori, lingvistik och kognitionsvetenskap. Empiriska metoder och fenomenologisk analys används för att belysa de teoretiska frågor som uppstår ur detta möte. Huvudfrågan har varit: Vad är specifikt för mänskligt betydelseskapande? För att besvara denna fråga, har vi undersökt de biologiska och historiska processer som gjort oss annorlunda andra djur.

Vad gäller institutionalisering har programmet varit en klar framgång. Sedan 2013 är Kognitiv Semiotik ett av ämnena för doktorsexamen vid Lunds universitet samt en inriktning inom mastern i språk och lingvistik. Efter att ha organiserat en kongress för Nordiska Föreningen för semiotiska studier (NASS) 2011 på temat "Mot kognitiv semiotik", tog CCS ledningen vid upprättandet av International Association for Cognitive Semiotics (IACS) under 2013, och Zlatev blev dess förste president. Sonesson är en av fem medlemmar i redaktionen för tidskriften Cognitive Semiotics (deGruyter), och Sonesson och Zlatev är redaktörer för bokserien Advances in Cognitive Semiotics, som publiceras av Peter Lang. I september 2014 organiserade vi den första internationella IACS kongressen, med över 140 deltagare från 29 länder, från Japan och Taiwan i öst, till Colombia och Mexiko i väst. CCS organiserade också ett antal internationella workshoppar om kognitiv-semiotisk utveckling (2012) samt om språktypologi och kognition (2013).

I ansökan formulerade vi två allmänna hypoteser: (a) människans kognitiva-semiotiska specificitet ligger inte i språket enbart, utan i medlen för att förmedla betydelse mer generellt; (b) det finns både biologiska anpassningar och historiska utvecklingen som ligger bakom det här. Vår forskning har till stor del bekräftat dessa hypoteser. Vi har visat att många språkliga kategorier är förankrade i fenomenologisk erfarenhet, till exempel vad gäller rum och rörelse, och vi har påvisat att gester och bilder är lika specifika för människan som språk. Den kulturella evolutionens roll betonas i en kommande bok som handlar om mimesis, språk, bilder, religion, urbanitet och kulturmöten (Dunér & Sonesson, in press). Dessutom har våra seminarier och våra publikationer bidragit till utvecklingen av kognitiv semiotik som ett fält, liksom till integrationen av fenomenologiska och experimentella metoder.

Forskning inom CCS har som planerat skett inom fem sammanlänkade teman:
Tema 1 tog upp ämnen språkutveckling, av begreppsutveckling, emotionell synkronisering och teckenbruk hos andra djur. Jämförelsen med andra arter är ett vanligt sätt att rekonstruera egenskaper hos människans förfäder. För dessa ändamål vi utnyttjat tidigare samarbeten med Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology (Sonesson) och Lunds Universitets Primatforskningsstation i Furuvik (Persson), liksom ett nytt samarbete med Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary (Madsen). Överlappningen av personal och intressen gjorde det naturligt att integrera den evolutionära Tema 1 och det ontogenetiska Tema 2 under de två sista åren av programmet. Vi utförde experiment med icke-mänskliga primater och barn, med inriktning på imitationens och intersubjektivitetens roll i utvecklingen av teckenbruk. Flera av dessa studier har publicerats, och fler är under utgivning eller utarbetande. Vår viktigaste gemensamma artikel (Zlatev et al. 2013) är en milstolpe i tillämpningen av den "begreppslig-empiriska spiral" som karaktäriserar kognitiv semiotik.

Tema 2 sysslar med forskning om utvecklingen av kognitiv-semiotiska förmågor hos barn som språk, gester, bilder och andra typer av semiotiska resurser. En huvudfråga var hur dessa förhåller sig till varandra och till allmän kognitiv och semiotisk kapacitet. Detta integrala synsätt på utveckling - inte bara på en semiotisk förmåga i taget - har varit en grundläggande inriktning i CCS. Det var viktigt att etablera begreppet "semiotisk utveckling" att beteckna en sådan omfattande studie av många olika typer av semiotisk kompetens och kapacitet hos barn. Detta tema är ett typfall för den integration av semiotisk teori och empirisk forskning som vi eftersträvar: alla studierna har gällt begrepp som "tecken", "betydelse", "representation", "kommunikativa intentioner", "indexikalitet", "ikonicitet", "konvention/normativitet", "intersubjektivitet" och/eller "kompositionalitet"(som alla nämns i bidragsansökan).

Vid sidan av forskningen i samarbete med Tema 1, så hade Tema 2 tre delprojekt med inriktning på språk och gester, bildförståelse samt teorier om semiotisk utveckling. Studiet av gest- och talutveckling hos thailändska och svenska barn, baserad på en longitudinell video korpus med naturalistiska interaktioner, har resulterat i flera publikationer, liksom i en internationellt uppmärksammad avhandling (2010) av Mats Andrén, som nu är styrelseledamot av International Society for Gesture Studies. Sara Lenninger försvarade sin avhandling om bildförståelsens utveckling under 2013. Tillsammans med Lenninger har Persson och Sonesson också jämfört barns förståelse för vad de ser när de tittar på något genom ett fönster, i en direktvideo, i en förinspelad video och i en spegel, vilket visade att de två första fallen är nästan lika lätta och de andra två nästan lika svåra. Denna studies originalitet består i att integrera förståelsen av spegelbilden i bildtolkningen, inte enbart i jagbegreppet.

Tema 3 undersökte universella mänskliga egenskaper som inte enbart är biologiska och försökte beskriva hur de har utvecklats. Kultursemiotiken användes för att relatera historiestudiet av till teorier om ontogeni och fylogeni och därmed redogöra för framväxten av kulturen som en minnesmekanism. Många enskilda bidrag kan nämnas här, men det viktigaste resultatet är Human Lifeworlds: The Cognitive Semiotics of Cultural Evolution (under utgivning, Peter Lang, 330 sidor), som är indelad i tio kapitel om evolutionär kultursemiotik, mimesis, språk, religion, urbanitet, bild, konst, narrativitet, vetenskap och kulturmöten. Dessutom ledde det i tre lyckade avknoppningar: Amazonasprojektet, som undersöker språk, kultur och identitet (nu med egen finansiering) och ett kulturmötesprojekt (numera finansierat av Wallenbergstiftelsen), och ett narratologiprojekt.

Forskningen inom Tema 4 centrerades på språktypologi ur ett kognitivt-semiotiskt perspektiv, som omfattar förklaring av ofta förekommande semantiska funktioner i språket från allmänmänskliga funktioner i medvetandet och kognition. Grammatik är konventionaliserad verbal kommunikation, som begränsas av egenskaperna hos mediet, inklusive kognitiva och fysiologiska begränsningar. Ett kognitivt-semiotiskt perspektiv på språket innebär ett ifrågasättande av den "Saussureanka dogmen" om det språkliga tecknets konventionalitet som leder till undersökning av fenomenet ljudsymbolik. Utöver ett stort antal artiklar exemplifieras denna forskning av Johan Blombergs doktorsavhandling 2014, vilken teoretisk och empirisk behandlar faktisk och icke-faktisk rörelse och tar hjälp av fenomenologisk analys för att avgränsa hur de konventionaliseras på svenska, franska och thailändska. Ahlner & Zlatev (2010) ger en kognitiv-semiotisk förklaring av ljudsymbolik och är också en innovativ empirisk studie som visar på betydelsen av både vokaler och konsonanter i upprättandet av den ikoniska grunden mellan uttryck och innehåll. Inga väsentliga förändringar av temat har gjorts, bortsett från att forskningen i paralleller mellan språk och musik blev till ett eget projekt (under ledning av Håkan Lundström, Malmö Musikhögskolan).

Vår avsikt med Tema 5 var att bygga vidare på hjärnavbildningsmetoder inom neurolingvistik och att utvidga dessa till andra semiotiska system. Eftersom våra medarbetare med mest kompetens inom detta område (Horne och Roll) fann oberoende finansiering för sina neurolingvistiska studier bestämde vi oss för att flytta fokus till experimentell visuella semiotik, som avser stillbilder (ritningar och fotografier); rörliga bilder (film); icke-verbala former av mänsklig kommunikation (ansiktsuttryck); verbala och visuella berättelser; och semantisk/pragmatiska tolkningsnivåer (i t.ex. matförpackningar). En ögonrörelsestudie som undersökte den emotionella kontextens effekt på betraktarens tolkning av en skådespelares ansiktsuttryck (Barratt, Cabak-Rédei, Innes-Ker, & van de Weijer, under utgivning) visade vad kognitiv semiotik kunde tillföra filmvetenskapen. I en annan studie över bildnarrativitet utförd av Michael Ranta fick deltagarna se konstverk med antingen korrekta eller felaktiga titlar, vilket resulterade i olika blickmönster. I samarbete med Copenhagen Business School, utförde Zlatev och Barrett ett antal studier av substantiv-substantiv-föreningar (som anger verkliga och fiktiva livsmedelsprodukter) såsom de tolkas antingen isolerade, i meningar, eller i verbal-visuella sammanhang.

Som vi lovade i ansökan har vi skapat en databas som innehåller en korpus med uppgifter om användning av språk och andra semiotiska resurser, inklusive videodokumentation, som transkriberats och taggats. Men delvis beroende på olikheten i rättslig status för olika datauppsättningar, och delvis för att ingen långsiktig finansiering är tillgänglig för framtida underhåll av en sådan webbplats, vi valde att inte göra denna databas tillgänglig för allmänheten.

En direkt avknoppning från arbetet i Tema 1 och 2 är det VR-finansierade projektet "The chameleon effect as a facilitator of intra- and cross-species imitation" som leds av Elainie Madsen med totalt tre medlemmar från CCS. Studiet av förståelse hos djuren för andra semiotiska resurser än symboler/språk har inspirerat flera nya forskningsfrågor och en del nya samarbete, särskilt med Julianne Kaminski vid University of Portsmouth för att flytta över vår studie av spegelbildstolkning som tecken på schimpanser i Ngamba, Uganda. Samarbetet med Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary har fortsatt efter CCS. Under loppet av CCS har vi också upptäckt potentialen i ögonrörelsemätning i semiotiska studier på djur och kommer att utveckla denna i framtiden. Vi söker för närvarande finansiering för ett projekt ägnat av bildsemiotikens utvecklingsaspekt, som är en direkt uppföljare till Tema 2.

Det kultursemiotiska förhållningssättet till kulturmöten inom Tema 3 ledde till ett projekt med titeln "The Making of Them and Us (MaTUs)", finansierat av Marcus och Amalia Wallenbergs Stiftelse, 2014-2016, vilket kommer att öka vår kunskap om kognitiv-semiotiska mekanismer i bilder som skildrar den andra och självet i olika kulturer, i synnerhet under tidig modernitet och i nutiden. Vår forskning har också bidragit till en djupare förståelse av berättelser i människans kognitiva processer, särskilt narrativitet förmedlad i bilder, men vi är fortfarande på jakt efter finansiering för denna utvidgning av programmet.

Vår studie av ikonicitet inom Tema 4 visar att språklig ljudsymbolik är både mer utbrett och mer psykologiskt effektiva (t.ex. i språkinlärning) än man tidigare trott, och detta bör utredas vidare, med naturligt anknytning till studiet av ikonicitet i gester och bilder (som studerats i tema 1 och 2 ur utvecklingssynpunkt) och i teckenspråk. Dessutom har temat visat på möjligheter att se på grammatik från ett kombinerat funktionellt-formellt perspektiv, så att en del av de grundläggande principerna för formell syntax (binaritet, hierarkisk struktur, endocentricitet) kan härledas ur de funktionella eller kognitiva principerna för ekonomi, vilket tillåter oss att rädda flera empiriska generaliseringar uttryckta formell syntax utan att åberopa medföddhet.

Som nämndes i början har CCS-programmet bidragit till att driva på det internationella forskarsamhället att sammanföra forskare som är intresserade av dessa frågor i International Association of Cognitive Semiotics. Många utländska forskare har varit inbjudna att ge föredrag vid vårt seminarium, och många av oss har också bjudits in till andra forskningscentra och som plenarföreläsare vid kongresser. Dessutom har vi organiserat empiriska studier i samarbete med lingvister i Paris, kognitionsvetare i Lublin och Torun, primatologer i Leipzig, psykologer i Köpenhamn och Portsmouth, och så vidare. På andra nivåer har vi haft samarbeten med semiotiker i Århus, Köpenhamn, Tartu, och Liège. Vi har också haft gästforskare under längre perioder från Kina, Polen och Rumänien. Slutligen gav Sonesson och Zlatev kursen " Introduction to Cognitive Semiotics" vid institutionen för kognitionsvetenskap i Lublin, Polen i maj 2014, och kommer att göra det igen under 2015.

Vår Tema 1-studie av gäspning som smittar från människor till hundar (Madsen & Persson, 2013) och schimpanser (Madsen et al, 2013) skapade ett stort medieintresse: den första studien blev en av de tio mest nedladdade artiklarna i Animal Cognition 2012, och den video som Lunds universitet producerade om den andra togs upp av YouTube och blev en av de 10 mest "virala" nyheterna på Yahoo News! den veckan.
CCS-programmet har resulterat i ett stort antal artiklar, som anges i bilagan uppdelade efter våra fem teman och deras delprojekt. Tre doktorsavhandlingar har presenterats av studenter anknutna till programmet: Andrén (2010); Lenninger (2012); Blomberg (2014). Alla tre blev senare medlemmar av CCS. I övrigt vill vi rikta uppmärksamheten mot ett antal publikationer som illustrerar vad vi menar med begreppet kognitiv semiotik, eftersom de är experimentella och på samma gång teoretiskt genomarbetade och använder sig av begrepp som härrör från semiotik, lingvistik, kognitionsvetenskap och psykologi: Zlatev, Madsen, Lenninger, Persson, Sayehli, Sonesson, & Weijer, (2013); Hribar, Call, & Sonesson, (2014); Lenninger, Persson, & Sonesson (under utgivning); Sonesson & Lenninger (under utgivning).

När programmet initierades 2009, var Open Access publicering inte så välkänd, så det var aldrig en fråga om att ansöka om finansiering för detta. Ändå var en av våra artiklar (Madsen et al. 2013) var en Open Access publicering, och flera andra har publicerats i Open Access tidskriften Public Journal of Semiotics (PJOS). Vi har alla gjort våra artiklar tillgängliga för allmänheten på Internet på andra sätt, de flesta av dem på programmet egen webbsida (http://projekt.ht.lu.se/en/ccs/publications/ ), på Lunds universitet hemsidor för publikationer (LUP), och/eller på våra individuella webbplatser på ResearchGate eller Academia.edu. I övrigt har våra artiklar publicerats upp i välkända fackgranskade publikationer inom semiotik, kognitionsvetenskap, lingvistik och psykologi.
