Forskningsprogrammet Ars edendi skapades för att vara ett editionsfilologiskt laboratorium i ett internationellt nätverk med målsättningen att utarbeta användbara metoder för att göra utgåvor av ett antal karakteristiska och centrala texttyper såväl på grekiska som på latin från det medeltida Europa. Denna skriftliga kultur omfattar vid sidan av en stor mängd bibelkommentarer många andra typiska brukstexter, som samlingar av modellpredikningar och läsningar för tidebönen liksom stora repertoarer av liturgiska troper, som fogades in som fria tillägg i mässans gregorianska sånger, kommentarer till hymner och sekvenser. Här återfinns också olika typer av antologier, som samlingar av vitsar och visdomsord av antika grekiska filosofer och berömda personer, gnomologier med rötter i hellensk tid och kopierade av medeltida skrivare för att användas inom retoriken. Trots att alla dessa texttyper utgjorde en central del i den medeltida kulturen är de än i dag ofta mer eller mindre okända och outforskade. Att dessa medeltida brukstexter inte ägnats så stort intresse bland textutgivare kan kanske förklaras som en effekt av förändringar över tid när det gäller synen på estetik, hermeneutik och originalitet. På många sätt kan man säga att fokus på brukstexter också sätter fokus på det som var att betrakta som allmängods, det som "alla" medeltidens människor skulle lära sig och känna till, det som utgjorde fundamentet i deras kultur och kunskapsförmedling.

I forskargruppen ingick från början Gunilla Iversen, Alexander Andrée, Brian Jensen, Erika Kihlman, Eva Odelman och Denis Searby. Till den ursprungliga kärngruppen knöts senare Alessandra Bucossi, Barbara Crostini och Elisabet Göransson. Andrée är nu verksam på Centre for Medieval Studies i Toronto och Bucossi på universitetet Ca'Foscari i Venedig. Gästforskare under kortare perioder har också varit Georg Stenborg, Pia Carolla och Mark Kauntze. Assistenter har varit Eric Cullhed, Robin Wahlsten Böckerman, Klara Lagerlöf och Agnes Vendel.

Programmets viktigaste resultat
Programmet har både utvecklat och modifierat etablerade utgivningsmetoder för att anpassa dessa för den typ av variationsrika brukstexter som karakteriserar medeltida textbruk. Vi har diskuterat och analyserat metoder från traditionella Lachmannska metoder till New philology och Digital humanities. I den gemensamma boken The Arts of Editing, där även medlemmar i AEs nätverk bidrar, diskuteras och utvärderas traditionella utgivningsmetoder i förhållande till de utvalda texttyperna och jämförs med de nya metoderna. Sådana prövande, undersökande metod-diskussioner publiceras mycket sällan och fungerar som en dörr in till laboratoriet. Inom AE har metodutvecklingen dels utgått från diplomatariska, genealogiska och semi-kritiska editionsmetoder, dels har metoder utarbetats för att kunna återge en texttradition i dess helhet och för editioner tillgängliga i digital form, något som ställer nya krav. Programmets forskare har bidragit till metodutvecklingen inom editionsfilologisk forskning på ett internationellt plan och kommit att inspirera till diskussioner och samarbeten med andra forskare som ägnar sig åt medeltida grekiska och latinska texter och deras kulturella kontext. Nytt primärt källmaterial har upptäckts inom flera projekt. Många tidigare okända handskrifter och textkällor har hittats, också av doktorander som tidigare varit assistenter i AE. De har sedan utvecklat egna utgivningsprojekt. Alla textutgåvor i AE kommer att kunna användas vidare av intresserade läsare och specialister inom olika delar av det medeltida Europas kultur, som historiker, idéhistoriker, musikvetare, konstvetare, teologer och litteraturvetare.

Att vi arbetar sida vid sida med medeltida texter från både den grekiska och den latinspråkiga sfären är ganska ovanligt, men mycket fruktbart för det gemensamma arbetet. En intensiv verksamhet har pågått i kärngruppen och i det internationella nätverket med gästföreläsningar, seminarier, workshops kring editionsfilologiska frågor. Dessa aktiviteter och publikationer har summerats årligen i Ars edendi Annual reports, (Ap.1, 6). Under rubriken Forskningsprogrammets viktigaste publikationer ges en kort översikt över texttyper och metoder i de åtta editionsprojekten och i den gemensamma boken The Arts of Editing.

Nya forskningsfrågor som genererats genom programmet
Frågor som rör editionsmetoder har utvecklats och modifierats för att passa olika medeltida texttyper. Många av de aktuella texttyperna karakteriseras ju av att de är uppbyggda av flera textlager: en grundtext och tolkningar och kommentarer till den, ofta sammansatta av passager hämtade från olika kyrkofäder och tidigare författare, brukstexter som kunde ändras för att passa i ett nytt sammanhang. En viktig uppgift för utgivaren är att identifiera textkällorna i sådana kompilerade texter. Editionsmetoder och material måste anpassas efter hur utgåvan är tänkt att användas av nya brukare och läsare i vår tid. Passar en mer eller mindre diplomatarisk utgåva av en enda utvald handskrift bäst, eller skall man försöka skapa en utgåva där alla olika lokala versioner kan återfinnas? I vilka fall är en digital utgåva att föredra framför en tryckt bok? Hur ska man som utgivare hitta rätt begränsning av ett ohanterligt material, vare sig det rör sig om en stor textmassa eller om en mycket stor mängd handskrifter? För dessa typer av texter fungerar de traditionella utgivningsmetoderna dåligt. Redan frågan om vad som skulle betraktas som en text, är svår att besvara. Är texten ett uttryck för ett avslutat verk eller är den en del av en ständigt pågående process? Ofta är svaret på den frågan, att det rör sig om brukstexter i ständig förvandling, där det mest intressanta och angelägna inte självklart är att ge ut den ursprungliga formen, utan kanske snarare att låta den nutida läsaren kunna följa hur de medeltida brukarna och författarna valt att ändra, variera, kompilera, redigera texten på ett sätt som passade olika syften.

Programmets internationella förankring
Vi har haft en stor glädje av medlemmarna i vårt internationella Advisory Board (N. Bell, British Library, London / Trinity, Cambridge, R. Berndt, Frankfurt, R. Beyers, Corpus Christianorum, Antwerpen, T. Janz, Vatikanbiblioteket, N.H. Petersen, Köpenhamn, F. Pontani, Venedig, J. Ziolkowski, Harvard).
Ett stort internationellt nätverk har skapats kring AE dels genom konferenser och workshops, dels genom samarbeten med forskare också från andra discipliner, och dels genom de öppna AE-föreläsningarna som också publiceras i Ars edendi Lecture series. Denna serie är tänkt att fortsätta på SU också efter programmets slutförande. I den gemensamma arbetsprocessen på The Arts of Editing Medieval Greek and Latin. A Casebook (PIMS) har AE gruppen samarbetat med filologer i AEs internationella nätverk (Ap. 1-5).

Forskningsinformativa insatser
Vi har strävat efter att på olika sätt förmedla den metodutveckling som skett och de diskussioner som förts i laboratoriet, dels till studenter med forskarambitioner, dels till doktorander, dels till en intresserad allmänhet. Vi har allt oftare kommit att konsulteras när det gäller frågor om textutgivning, inte bara inom ämnena grekiska och latin utan även inom andra ämnen (romanska språk, bokhistoria, sanskrit, praktisk teologi, musikvetenskap, med mera). Vi har ordnat en konferens i Toronto 2010 och i augusti 2016 arrangerar vi ett svenskt kollokvium och en internationell konferens, The Arts of Editing : Past-Present-Future. (Se prel. Program Ap. 7).
AEs medarbetare har hållit öppna seminarier om editionsfrågor och flera doktorander har under dessa år sökt sig till utgivningsprojekt som ett direkt resultat av kontakterna med AE. Vi har hållit seminarier på universiteten i Stockholm, Uppsala och Lund, Paris och i Piacenza. Göransson har med en kollega i Lund skapat en tvärvetenskaplig distanskurs för doktorander om Äldre texters förmedling. För en vidare publik har också Kihlman bloggat på RJ:s hemsidan och framträtt på Bok och Biblioteksmässan i Göteborg med en presentation av AE. Vidare har Kihlman och Searby skrivit understreckare och andra populärvetenskapliga artiklar. Iversen har spelat in en cd där utgivna texter framförs och sammanställt en bok på svenska om AE-programmet och med Mikael Agaton har vi spelat in en kort och en lång film om AE som finns att ladda ner via RJ:s och AEs hemsidor. Programmets viktigaste publikationer
Utöver AE lectures och ett stort antal vetenskapliga artiklar och delstudier med analyser av textkritiska och editionsfilologiska frågor är delprojektens stora texteditioner de viktigaste resultaten av arbetet i AE (Publikationer och Ap. 3, 5, 6).
1. En latinsk bibelkommentar, en Glossa till Johannesevangeliet av Anselm av Laon från slutet av 1000-talet. Materialet ges ut på basis av 14 handskrifter, i sin tur framsållade ur hundratals, där den utgivna texten representerar resultatet av en analys av texternas strukturella organisation, snarare än från olika gemensamma och bindande fel. Utgivare: Andrée.
2. En digital interaktiv utgåva och en tryckt edition av en grekisk Psaltarkommentar med inledningar, glossor och kommentarer i text och bild i en grekisk handskrift från 1050-talet, Vatikanbiblioteket, Vaticanus graecus 752. Materialet presenteras i en volym i serien Studi e testi. Texterna ges ut dels i en interaktiv digital utgåva med psaltarpsalmernas texter, kommentartexter, inledningar och illuminationer i samarbete med Vatikanbiblioteket dels i bokform med en textutgåva av Hesychios inledningar till psaltarpsalmerna. Utgivare: Crostini.
3. Liturgisk poesi, troper i många lokala versioner till Gloriasången i den medeltida romerska mässan, Corpus Troporum XII. Tropes du Gloria, ges ut i två volymer med redovisning av alla lokala versioner från 137 handskrifter från olika platser i Europa från mitten av 800-talet till 1250-talet. Ofta kan en lokal trop bestå av en kombination av mer än 20 tropverser, av mer än 50 möjliga. Materialet innehåller ett stort antal vandrande verser, som kan återfinnas i flera olika troper. Tabeller anger alla olika verskombinationer i de olika handskrifterna med en metod som tydligt visar alla de lokala versionerna. Utgivare: Iversen.
Dessutom en analyserande studie av text och musik i liturgisk poesi med en antologi och en CD. La parole chantée. Invention poétique et musicale dans le Haut Moyen Âge Latin. Utgivare: Colette och Iversen.
4. Sekvenskommentarer: en samling kommentarer till sekvenserna för hela det liturgiska året. Editionen innehåller en syntetisk text som etablerats utifrån konceptet "den representativa texten", en metod som utarbetats för material som innehåller mycket intentionell variation. Den representativa texten innebär att man kan framställa en kritisk text, baserad på flera textvittnen och med hänsyn tagen till hela handskriftstransmissionen och texttraderingen, men där utgivningsprinciperna inte utgår från arketyper och deras rekonstruktion. Utgivare: Kihlman.
5. En samling modellpredikningar för årets alla festdagar. Samlingen, som är tillskriven Nicolaus de Aquaevilla från 1200-talet, var avsedd att användas fritt som utgångspunkt för textutläggningar i predikningar. Den användes till exempel flitigt av predikanterna i Vadstena. Den här utgivna texten baseras på en inkunabel, vilket är kontroversiellt, samt på tre tidiga handskrifter, av vilka en kan vara förlagan till inkunabeln.

6. Ett komplett lokalt lectionarium med texter att läsas i tidebönen hela det liturgiska året samlade i fyra handskrifter från 1100-talets andra hälft från Piacenza i Norditalien. Texterna är kompilerade dels av passager hämtade från många allmänt lästa kyrkofäder och tidiga kommentatorer, dels av texter skrivna för lokalt bruk i Piacenza. Det omfångsrika materialet ges ut i modifierad diplomatarisk form i fyra volymer.

7. En samling av grekiska visdomsord och anekdoter från hellenistisk tid, så kallade gnomologier, kopierade i handskrifter från 900-talet till 1500-talet. I detta editionsarbete handlar det om att kartlägga och ge ut en bestämd texttradition snarare än att ge ut en bestämd text. Det gäller anekdot- och sentenssamlingar som är klart besläktade beträffande koncept, ordning och innehåll, men som ändå visar upp så stora variationer att det varken går att upprätta ett så kallat stemma eller återskapa en ursamling till vilken alla de andra kan härledas. Materialet utges dels i digital form under titeln Apophthegmata et gnomae secundum alphabetum, http://www.ancientwisdoms.ac.uk/library/gnomologia/, dels i form av en tryckt bok, The Sayings and Maxims of the Greeks. An edition of the Gnomologicum Vaticanum and related collections. Utgivare Searby.
8. En grekisk dogmatisk stridsskrift från 1100-talet med argument mot den romerska läran hämtade från många olika källor, Andronikos Kamateros: Sacrum Armamentarium. Den kritiska editionen innehåller en omfattande femfaldig apparat. Utgivare Bucossi.
9. The Arts of Editing Medieval Greek and Latin: a Casebook. En samling fallstudier av AE-programmets medarbetare och textutgivare i AEs internationella nätverk, där författarna diskuterar för- och nackdelar med de olika metoder de använt för att ge ut texter inom en rad typiska medeltida textgenrer. De textutgivare som medverkar i boken bjöds in specifikt, eftersom deras pågående eller avslutade utgivningsprojekt ryms inom eller angränsar till de områden som AE fokuserar på. (Utgivare: Göransson i nära samarbete med Iversen, Crostini, Jensen, Kihlman, Odelman och Searby).

Programmets publiceringsstrategi
Utöver de digitala utgåvorna har vi funnit det mest effektivt att publicera våra editioner i väl ansedda internationella förlag med peer review, som i serierna Corpus Christianorum. Series Graeca, Corpus Christianorum. Continuatio Mediaevalis, Writings from the Greco-Roman World, och i serien Témoins de notre histoire Turnhout: Brepols, SISMEL i Florens och PIMS i Toronto. Liksom tidigare volymer med troper till mässans Ordinarium ges editionen av troper till Gloria ut i serien Studia Latina Stockholmiensia, SU, och är nedladdningsbar från DIVA SUB.
Artiklarna är dels publicerade i vetenskapliga tidskrifter med peer-review, dels i actavolymer från internationella vetenskapliga konferenser.
